How Popular is Ernest Hemingway?

Probably one of the most famous writers of all time, certainly in the top 10 or maybe even top 5.

He is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and Noble Prize for Literature. His most famous novel was “The Old Man and the Sea. He is an American Novelist, journalist and short story writer.

Where it all began

 

Cicero, Illinois is where he was born. Cicero is a western suburb of Chicago. He was born on July 21, 1899 and died July 2, 1961. His father was a physician and his mother who wanted to be an opera performer gave voice and music lessons on their large Victorian homestead.

Ernest Hemingway was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. the family owned a cottage called Windemere on Walloon Lake in Michigan.

In school he excelled academically and athletically and he wrote for the school paper. Right out of high school he became a reporter for the Kansas City Star newspaper.

War Correspondent

 

During WWI he joined the Red Cross even though he wanted to join the Army. He failed the physical for the army and joined the Red Cross. As a member of the Red Cross he served in Milan, Italy and soon fell in love with a nurse at the hospital but he returned to the Us and she did not and fell in love with  an Italian officer.

Soon after that experience, Hemingway wrote “A Farewell to Arms”.

After the war, Hemingway briefly lived on Toronto, Canada and in Chicago where he married Hadley Richardson. They lived there only a short period of time and moved to Paris, France. Then in 1923 he moved back to Toronto where his first son was born.

He apparently did not like men that were openly homosexual and wrote many short stories against the way they would act. One of those books was “The Sea Change”.

A prolific Writer

In 1926 he wrote “The Sun Also Rises” which was said to be inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald”s book “The Great Gatsby”.

Hemingway divorced and married again in 1926 and converted to Catholicism. He soon received bad news when his father committed suicide and shortly thereafter a good friend of his committed suicide. Then came the birth of his 2nd son and then 2 years later his 3rd son was born.

His Popularity Soared

He became hugely popular and independently wealthy with the success of his books.

He kept publishing books until 1961 when he committed suicide with a shotgun to his head, thus ending a brilliant career.
